The thing that distinguishes the competitors from everyone else in a gym is their passion to fight. It’s a quality many of us wish we had, and it’s a common question grapplers ask of themselves – is it even possible to train this? Can we stoke the fires of passion inside us and become better fighters?
If anybody knows this answer, it’s Ricardo Vieira. A nine-time world champion in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, he and his brother Leo Vieira founded the world-famous Checkmat team. Known for their amazing success in competition, the team consistently does well at major championships (such as the recent 2012 PanAms, where they took home many gold medals).
In this video we went inside the FightZone academy in Copacabana to investigate what it is that makes this team different. We found a competitive, spirited environment with amazing technical instruction and plenty of energetic sparring. Ricardo explains a little about why he felt the need to be a competitor, and how he helps his athletes reach their goal of becoming champions.
